Lebanon’s information minister resigns after Beirut port blast

Lebanon’s information minister Manal Abdul Samad on Sunday quit in the first government resignation since a deadly port blast killed more than 150 people and destroyed swathes of Beirut.

“After the enormous Beirut catastrophe, I announce my resignation from government,” she said in a statement carried by local media, apologizing to the Lebanese public for failing them.

Five Lebanese lawmakers have already quit in protest of the port explosion that killed at least 158 people, injured thousands and left a vast trail of destruction at several neighborhoods in the capital.

Lebanese officials said the blast was caused by the detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been stored unsafely at the port for the last six years.
