Amnesty International criticizes Kurdistan authorities for cracking down on protesters

Amnesty International has called on the authorities in the Kurdistan Region to end the repression linked to the protests; Confirming that there are at least 30 protesters who are still in custody, among more than 100 people who were arrested within a year.

This came according to a statement published by the organization on its official website, on Tuesday.

"The authorities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq should put an end to their continued repression of protests through arbitrary arrests and harassment," the organization said.

"It must immediately release detainees, including those who have already been sentenced after unfair trials, in relation to their participation in protests or related professional activity or practice," it added in its statement.

"The authorities in the region have launched a horrific crackdown as part of their efforts to silence critics over the past year," the statement added.

And continued, "The regional authorities arrested between March 2020 and April 2021, more than 100 people in Dohuk governorate, most of them were released, while at least 30 are still in detention, including activists and journalists who have been sentenced ."
