On Tuesday, Iraq announced its election to the post of Vice-President of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in its 65th session.
In a statement issued at midnight Monday-Tuesday, Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Sahaf said that "Iraq was elected as Vice-President of the 65th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency."
Al-Sahaf explained that "the election of Iraq to this position comes within the framework of his country's return to its international standing in international forums."
The 65th annual Atomic Energy Conference kicked off in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on Monday, and will continue until September 24, with the participation of high-level representatives from the agency's 173 member states.
