Guterres: A humanitarian ceasefire is necessary in Gaza

The UN Secretary-General said a humanitarian ceasefire was necessary for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza effectively.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about passing a resolution by the Security Council for urgent steps to reach humanitarian aid in Gaza and reach a ceasefire said "Of course I was hopeful, but that doesn't mean these events happened in the light of our hopes".

Guterres said, "There is a decision, but if we want humanitarian aid to reach Gaza effectively, we understand that a humanitarian ceasefire is really necessary".

"They have supported every effort to improve humanitarian aid in Gaza, and negotiations between the parties continue," he said. "They believe that the Palestinian government is the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and conditions must be created that allow the Palestinian government to take responsibility for Gaza, it will pave the way for a two-state solution to become a reality," Guterres said.

The UN Security Council has adopted a draft resolution calling for "urgent steps" to ensure safe and uninterrupted access to large-scale humanitarian aid in Gaza. The resolution received 13 votes in favor out of 15, with the United States and Russia abstaining.
