Iranian authorities executed 834 people last year alone, the highest number since 2015.

Iranian authorities executed 834 people in 2023, the highest number since 2015, and compared to 2022, the death penalty increased by 43 percent.

This is the second time in more than two decades that more than 800 people have been executed in a single year, according to the Norway-based Iranian Human Rights Organization and the Paris-based Global Coalition Against the Death Penalty Executions, where (972) people, were executed in (2015).

The two NGOs accuse Iran of using the death penalty to spread fear inside the country following widespread protests in late 2022 following the death of Zhina Amini.
