Turkey's second border crossing with Iraq will be opened

Turkey will open its second border crossing with Iraq, the second strategic trade crossing after Ibrahim Khalil.

Ovakoy will become the second strategic border crossing with Iraq, connecting Turkey to Basra and then the Arabian Gulf through the "development road," Turkish media reported Wednesday.

Ovakoy is located in the town of Slopi in North Kurdistan's Şırnak province, about 20 kilometers west of the Ibrahim Khalil gate, which is known as the Khapur gate on the Turkish side.

With the opening of Ovakoy, the congestion of trade movement at the Ibrahim Khalil gate will be reduced.

The port will be Turkey's fastest trade route with Iraq and containers will reach Turkey from Basra within two days and then to Europe, the Turkish Sabah newspaper reported.

The completion of the "development road" is expected to affect the Swiss-Egyptian sea route, which currently carries 12 percent of world trade.
