Guterres: Hatred against Muslims is on the rise in several parts of the world

Antonio Guterres said on World Day Against Fear of Islam that hatred against Muslims is on the rise in several parts of the world.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a message that systematic discrimination and restrictions violate the rights and dignity of Muslims. Divisive and misleading statements stigmatize communities, and spreading hate online fuels violence.

"Much of this disturbing trend is part of a broader pattern of attacks on religious groups and vulnerable populations, including Jews, minority Christian communities, and others."

He added, "We must confront bigotry and root it out in all its forms. Leaders must condemn problematic sermons and protect religious freedom. Digital platforms must moderate hateful content and protect users from harassment."

World Day to Combat Islamophobia or Fear of Islam is an international event set by the United Nations on March 15 and is celebrated every year in 140 countries. The choice of March 15 coincides with the anniversary of a shooting at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, in which 51 people were killed during Friday prayers.
