UN: 54 people have been executed in Iran in the past three weeks

The UN Office for Human Rights says 54 people have been executed in Iran in the past three weeks.

"The increase in prisoner executions, especially on Tuesday, when two people were executed in Iran, is worrying," Jeremy Lawrence, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Human Rights (OHCHR), said.

"In just three weeks, 54 people have been executed in the country and the punishment does not comply with most principles of the right to life," he said.

"Mohammad Qubadloo became the ninth person to be executed on charges of the 2022 demonstrations. Farhad Salimi, a Kurdish man, was executed after serving 14 years in prison," he said.

Jeremy Lawrence calls on Iran and its courts to commit to a fair trial of prisoners.

"We are concerned about reports that prisoners are forced to confess under pressure," he said.
