Death sentence for 8 Muslim Brotherhood leaders in Egypt

Yesterday, Monday, the State Security Criminal Court in Egypt decided to refer the papers of the guide of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Muhammad Badie, and 7 of the group’s leaders to the Grand Mufti of the Republic to express his legal opinion on the death sentence, to convict them in a case known as the “Platform Events” whose events date back to 2013.

The court set a session for next September 20 to pronounce the case in which 79 accused leaders of the Brotherhood are being tried.

Among the most prominent people referred to the Mufti, in addition to the General Guide of the Brotherhood, are Mahmoud Ezzat, the Acting Guide, Mohamed El-Beltagy, Amr Zaki, Osama Yassin, and Safwat Hegazy.

The leader of the Islamic Group, Assem Abdel Majid, and the Salafist preacher Muhammad Abdel Maqsoud, who are being tried in absentia in this case, were also referred.

On July 27, 2013, clashes broke out in the vicinity of the memorial in Nasr City - east of Cairo - close to the sit-in in Rabaa Al-Adawiya Square - the largest sit-in of supporters of the late President Mohamed Morsi - between protesters and police forces - known as the platform events - which led to the death of 80 people. More than 300 others were injured.
